11/12/2011 ‘X-Factor’ Contestants Attacked By Bedbugs At Los Angeles’ Grafton Hotel

Several “X Factor” finalists claim they were nearly eaten alive at their L.A. hotel this week, TMZ has learned — after a swarm of bloodthirsty bed bugs feasted on their flesh … while they slept.

Sources close to the contestants tell TMZ, the unidentified singers in question were staying at the Grafton Hotel … and when four of them woke up in the morning, they were covered in bites.

We’re told the contestants did a little digging and claim they discovered the hotel had a massive bed bug infestation — so they bailed asap, and notified “X Factor” producers … who then dealt with the hotel and found new digs for the singers.

Sources connected to production say the hotel acknowledged the bed bug problem. A rep for the Grafton had no comment when we called.

Sleep tight.

10/12/2011 Howard Stern Blames Bedbug Sprays & Environment On Steve Jobs Death

Howard Stern kicked off his first show back from vacation lamenting the death of Apple co-creator Steve Jobs, and pointing the finger at global environmental pollution as a contributor to Jobs’ ultimate demise.

Stern is a hardcore fan of Apple products and has been calling on the world’s great medical minds to hurry up and find a cure since Jobs announced he was battling pancreatic cancer in 2004. Stern made a rare appearance on Twitter on Wednesday, October 5th shortly after the announcement of Jobs’ death, stating:

“Steve Jobs was a true original. So sad. A tremendous loss.”

Monday though, as Stern mused on the inventions the world might have seen if Jobs had lived to a ripe old age, the radio host pointed to our toxic living environment as at least one of the culprits in Jobs’ death.

“He got cancer. Who knows why. This cancer it’s so out of control, I really do believe it’s our environment. We have such pollution. I walked into a room the other day—they must have been cleaning with some kind of weird chemical. You breathe this stuff in—it’s got to have an effect on you…Somebody died—they were spraying for those bedbugs…Some guy dropped dead he breathed in that bedbug crap. Look, I’m telling you, they got so many weird things in the environment—that’s why we’ve all got cancer. Everybody’s got it. It’s unbelievable what’s going on with this cancer. You can’t avoid it. It’s out of f***ing control.”

Howard Stern has become a vocal advocate for environmental conservation in recent years, especially since hooking up with his second wife, animal rescue advocate Beth Ostrosky Stern.

BedBugs Strike Reebok Sports Club Second Time

6/9/2011 BedBugs Strike Reebok Sports Club Second Time: Upper West Side Gym Has Another Infestation

These bed bugs are attracted to blood – and apparently fame too.

The parasitic insects invaded Manhattan’s posh Reebok Sports Club/NY where celebrities such as Chris Rock, Antonio ‘L.A.’ Reid and Taye Diggs work out.

The insects were discovered at the Upper West Side guym – where Jerry Seinfeld first met his wife Jessica – last Thursday in the men’s locker room.

The tiny parasites feed on human blood and are known to transmit diseases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A sign warning of the creepy critters remained at the entrance yesterday morning.

The sports club, which is near ABC headquarters, is known to boast celebrity television hosts for members as well.

The sports club said the gym member involved was swiftly contacted about the bed bugs.

The member whose locker was affected was immediately notified,’ the club said in a statement. ‘Their locker and belongings were fully sterilised under the supervision of professionals.’

The vacant surrounding lockers were also cleaned as a precautionary measure.

‘At this time, we have been told by professionals that the club no longer has evidence of the bedbugs,’ the gym’s statement said.

The club is not the first exclusive enclave to battle the bugs.

The flagship Niketown store, the Empire State Building, the Time Warner Center and the Brooklyn district attorney’s office have all reported problems.

Jerry Seinfeld met his wife, Jessica Sklar, at the sports club. Ms Sklar had just returned from a honeymooon with Eric Nederlander, a theatrical producer she later divorced to marry Mr Seinfeld in 1999.

New York and Cincinnati are the two most bug-infested cities in the U.S.

There has been a bed bug epidemic in America, and it was believed to have been started in the Big Apple – though now the little critters are all over the country.

Bed bugs, or Cimex lectularius, are thought to be the biggest small pest in the U.S. with thousnads of people affected.

4/9/2011 Bedbugs Working Out At Reebok Sports Club NYC: Members Up In Arms

Bedbugs have invaded the men’s locker room at the Reebok Sports Club, and members of the pricey Columbus Avenue gym say they’re up in arms. A source tells us he saw workers “emptying out lockers Wednesday,” and added that the club was giving affected members gift certificates to smooth things over. But some aren’t assuaged. “People are afraid,” said the source. “They don’t want to leave their clothes overnight anymore.” He added he fears that fellow gym rats could take the bugs home with them. (Speaking of rats, Page Six reported that Reebok had one of those, too, in December — although the club claimed it was a mouse.) A Reebok spokesperson confirmed the bedbug outbreak, and gave us a statement that the gym “immediately contacted professionals” who have “conducted a complete inspection of the club.” Reebok couldn’t confirm the gift-certificate giveaway, however. A source said members include Taye Diggs, Chris Cuomo, LA Reid and Ronn Torossian.

12/17/10 Star Trek Actor George Takei Attacked By BedBugs: Forced To Call Exterminators After NYC Apartment Became Infested

Actor George Takei was recently forced to call in the exterminators after his New York apartment became infested with bedbugs.

The former Star Trek star reveals he and his partner Brad Altman were “eaten alive” by the tiny parasites earlier this month, prompting the couple to seek professional help to fumigate their home.

He tells radio DJ Howard Stern, “We were (in New York) last month and nothing happened, and then this month, I’ve been eaten alive.”

And Takei is convinced they picked up the bugs during a trip to the theatre: “Brad and I go to the theatre a lot, and I think they must have been in the seats. There’s no other way we could have gotten them.”

11/1/10 How To Beat Bedbugs On Vacation

Pop singing sensation Lauren Hildebrand — yeah, I didn’t know her either — woke up in a swank Manhattan hotel with unexpected company recently: bedbugs. They had bitten her up and down her back.

Sleepless in the days afterward, she used the extra time to spoof her hit song “Boyshirts” as “Bedbugs,” linking one refrain after another revealing too much information (TMI). It’s funny enough but sounds just as bad as the original. And she followed it with a statement warning of the “danger” of staying in New York hotels.

Danger? All hotels? Sounds like the bedbugs are winning.

It is an unpleasant situation. These real-live bloodsuckers with a particular taste for people are back, in all 50 states, after a 50-year hiatus. But, even at Halloween, bedbugs aren’t something to overly fear.

For starters, bedbugs don’t transmit diseases. And there are ways to prevent bites in hotels, be it a hostel dorm or $400 suites.

When booking a room, check websites such as BedBugRegistry.com or BedBugger.com, which list hotels with recent complaints.

After checking into a room anywhere, uncover the bed and search mattress seams for bugs or signs of bugs (fecal stains, blood), as well as atop the bed frame and in bedside tables. If you see them, get out. But know that even that doesn’t necessarily mean all rooms in a hotel are infested.

Because the bugs tend to stay near the bed, keep all your belongings, including suitcases, at least eight feet from the bed if possible, and pack dirty clothes in bags that can be sealed.

If you’ve gotten through a trip untouched, the fight isn’t done. Wash everything, even clothes you didn’t wear, when you return home. And dry on hot, if possible.

Long absent in the U.S., the bugs likely returned with returning travelers or visitors from abroad. I’ve stayed in a lot of wacky places, from $5 Cambodian guesthouses and communal Russian train station boarding rooms to luxury skyscraper hotels in Bangkok. And I’ve never seen a bedbug.

Why Are BedBugs Growing At An Alarming Rate?

Posted on 28 October 2010 by

10/28/10 Why Are BedBugs Growing At An Alarming Rate?

Bed Bug Infestations are growing at an alarming rate. Many hotels, movie theaters, retailers, and other businesses are dealing with them these days.

Most of us have heard about the resurgence of bed bugs around the world and in the United States. Cities in states all over the country are reporting an alarming increase in the number of reports of bed bugs. It appears that no one is immune to dealing with bed bugs. Many Hollywood stars have reported dealing with bed bug infestations in recent months.

The reason for this is simple. Bed bugs are most commonly picked up in hotels and other high trafficked areas. People that travel and stay in hotels all of the time are at the highest risk of dealing with a bed bug infestation. That means that celebrities like Tom Cruise, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carrel must know how to deal with bed bugs.

Unfortunately it is not just bedrooms and hotels that are dealing with bed bugs nowadays. 2010 has seen a sharp increase in reports of bed bugs in commercial establishments. Any place with high traffic needs to be on high alert for the little blood suckers. Airports deal with bed bugs all of the time. That is because bed bugs usually travel home in suitcases and clothing. Even though the problem has not been readily reported, airports are dealing with bed bug infestations in record numbers!

New York city has seen a huge increase in reports of infestations in commercial buildings. They are dealing with bed bugs all over the city, and the infestations show no signs of slowing down. New York has a huge tourism industry, so they are especially susceptible to activity.

While movie stars and commercial buildings have access to funds to fight an infestation, consumers often have to fight the infestation with home remedies. The market for home products to fight them is exploding right now, but researchers are still searching for a product to effectively exterminate bed bugs.

10/26/10 Did Charlie Sheen See BedBugs In His NYC Hotel Room?

We would like to think not…but…Police we’re called to his NYC hotel room at the Plaza Hotel early today.

Two months after getting out of rehab, cops were called to a Midtown hotel after a drunk and naked Charlie Sheen, in the company of a call girl, trashed his suite early today after learning he’d lost his wallet and cellphone, authorities said.

Security at The Plaza Hotel on Fifth Avenue called police just after 2 a.m. where they found the hard-partying Sheen after a woman called the front desk from the famed Eloise Suite, sources told The Post.

Tables and chairs had been thrown around the room and a chandelier was also damaged, sources said.

The damage to the luxury suite totaled about $7,000, according to Life & Style magazine.

“The Two and a Half Men” star was accompanied to New York Hospital by his ex-wife Denise Richards, who was staying in a separate room at the Eloise Suite on the 18th floor, sources said.

RadarOnline.com reported that Sheen had taken cocaine and flipped out.

The suite is named for the popular children’s book about a little girl named Eloise who lives on the top floor of the tony hotel.

Sheen was not injured, but checked himself into the hospital for a psych evaluation, sources said.

Sheen, 45, told police he had been “out partying,” sources said.

After he returned to his room with an unidentified woman, he noticed his wallet and cellphone were missing, causing him to fly into a rage, sources said.

A police official said the woman in the room with Sheen was an escort.

The hooker called the front desk from Room 1832 — which features a pink-and-white stripped door — and reported that Sheen was passed out on the bed.
